Girl With a Pearl Earring

In class we have started reading Girl With a Pearl Earring.

The book is based on a painting done by Vameer and is based on the facts known about his life.

From the novel so far my impressions are that Griet is a young girl who is a bit mysterious and we will be let into her life further on in the book. I think that something may go on between her and Vermeer as he did paint a picture of her and that they may share a special bond later on in the book.

One thing I do not understand is how her father became dissabled. Was it a work accident?

Before I read the book I did think that Griet would be a maid because even though she had a pearl earring she only had one so maybe that signified it was very special to her because she did not have much else. 

I hope it is a good book to read.
